PARIS, 18-Feb-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Synova, based in France and leader in manufacturing high-performance recycled polypropylene for the automotive sector, has been acquired by Total. The deal’s amount has not been disclosed.
Following the acquisition, Total’s polymers know-how will be combined with Synova’s recycling expertise with the aim of increasing the supply of recycled polypropylene for automotive applications that deliver the same performance as virgin polymers.
Synova’s current capacity is in the range of 20,000 tonnes per year of polypropylene, which meets the highest quality standards of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and automakers from recycled plastics.
Bernard Pinatel, President Refining & Chemicals, Total on the acquisition:
“By contributing to the lighter weight of vehicles, plastics improve their energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Producing them from recycled materials will also meet the challenge of managing their end of life. The acquisition of Synova is a concrete proof of our commitment to developing plastic recycling. It reinforces the activities we already carry out in recycling and contributes to Total’s ambition to be the responsible energy major.”
Total is very active in plastics recycling. The company is a founding member of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, whose mission is to end plastic waste pollution in the environment, particularly in the oceans.
In general, Total works and innovates on all types of recycling in order to emerge high-performance recycled polymers. One example is the Circular Compounds®, produced by Total, which is polypropylene and polyethylene that has at least 50% recycled materials and offers the same properties as virgin polymers.
Furthermore, Total, together with partners Citeo, Saint-Gobain and Syndifrais, is part of a project aiming at the emergence of a polystyrene recycling system in France by 2020.
Additionally, Total’s joint venture Total Corbion PLA in Thailand runs a plant that has a capacity of 75,000 tonnes per year of PLA, a 100% biobased, recyclable and biodegradable bioplastic.
Additionally, Total is one of the world leaders in bioplastics. Our joint venture Total Corbion PLA owns in Thailand a plant with a capacity of 75,000 tonnes per year of PLA, a 100% biobased, recyclable and biodegradable bioplastic.
Total is active in 130 countries around the world and its 100,000 employees are committed to better energy that is safer, more affordable, cleaner and accessible to as many people as possible. The company’s ambition is to become the responsible energy major.
